Female Sterilization

Female sterilization is the most effective form of birth control, and can be accomplished by a minimally invasive procedure with a laparoscopic approach.

During this surgery, a portion of the fallopian tube is either burned or cut, or the entire tube is removed. This method is preferred because it also helps to decrease a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer. For patients undergoing scheduled C-sections, any sterilization can be performed at the time of delivery.

This surgery is an outpatient procedure, done by one of our physicians at Virginia Hospital Center. Patients will be discharged the same day of the surgery, and can usually resume their regular activities in less than two weeks. This surgery is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
