Biography
Dr. Doherty has been practicing and teaching cancer medicine and surgery for more than 25 years, and is a 21-year Navy veteran.
Dr. Doherty graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Vermont before obtaining his medical degree at the same school. After graduating, he completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Magee – Women’s Hospital where he was elected the sole Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He is trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotic gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Doherty has been a professor and residency instructor at several universities and hospitals, and is a pre-eminent expert in his field. He was a Clinical Associate Professor from 1993 to 2000 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, and from 2003 to 2006 at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center. From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Doherty served as the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Virginia Medical Center and Clinic in Seattle, Washington.
Through his practice, he has received several awards, including an Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Physicians Teaching and Service Award at the University of Texas in 1993, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award in 1992, and the University of Texas Medical Branch Golden Apple Clinical Teaching Award in 1992. He was named as one of Washington Magazine’s “The State’s Best Doctors” in 2010, 2011, and 2012. He was named one of Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2016 TOP DOCTORS.
He joined the Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group in 2014. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the Outpatient Infusion Center at Virginia Hospital Center. He emphasizes quality, safety, and patient education in his approach to patient care.
