High-resolution anoscopy (HRA) is a procedure that enables the examination and evaluation of the anal canal. It allows visualization of the anal mucosa up to 30 times the magnification of a normal anoscope. During HRA, applications of “coloring” agents (dilute acetic acid and Monsel’s solution) are placed on the anal mucosa which facilitates the identification of abnormal tissue. No prep is needed for this examination and it is discouraged due to interference with the results of the exam.
HRA is performed on any patient who has an abnormal anal cytology or is at high risk for genital or anal HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).
