Dr. Miguel A. Fernandez, M.D. earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and English at the University of Miami. He also went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Miami in Florida in 1990. . He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where he was the Chief Resident from 1993 to 1994. Beginning in 1990 part of his training brought him to Arlington Hospital, the precursor to Virginia Hospital Center.
From 1994 to 1996, he was the Assistant Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Arlington Hospital assisting in the training of Georgetown Ob/Gyn residents and medical students. He also began to work in a private practice in our hospital, eventually becoming President and senior partner. He was elected Secretary/Treasury of the VHC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2010. He was then selected by his peers to Chair the VHC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2013. In 2016, he was named Co-Director of the Medical Student and Resident Education at Virginia Hospital Center. He has been on the Medical Staff at VHC since 1994.
He has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Georgetown University in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1994, where he was presented with the Humanism and Dedication to Teaching Award and Professor Appreciation Award in May and December of 2010.
He is a member of several Professional Societies, including the American Medical Association, the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Arlington County Medical Society and the Catholic Medical Association. He is the Medical Consultant for the Arlington Street Peoples Assistance Network. He is a member of Virginia Hospital Center’s Medical Brigade. He has received several awards for community service.
He is a skilled gynecologic surgeon, laparoscopist, robotic surgeon, and obstetrician. His interests include education, hospital safety and process improvement, reducing physician stress, reducing cesarean section rates, and simulation training for obstetric emergencies.
Dr. Fernandez joined the VHC Physician Group in 2016, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
