Active Surveillance (Prostate Cancer)

Services » Treatments » Urologic Cancers » Prostate Cancer » Active Surveillance (Prostate Cancer)

Not all men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer require treatment. In situations where the patient has a very small amount of cancer in the prostate and/or “slow growing”/less aggressive tumor type, it is very reasonable to closely follow the patient rather than initiate aggressive treatment. Individuals who undergo active surveillance will have periodic but frequent monitoring of their cancer via PSA blood tests, digital rectal exams and repeat prostate biopsies. If the cancer is discovered to be advancing then treatments such as surgery or radiation can be considered at that time. The advantage of active surveillance in certain well selected individuals is the avoidance of over treatment (and potential side effects) in men whoʼs cancer is unlikely to be life threatening
