The Heartburn Center at Virginia Hospital Center utilizes state-of-the-art technology to perform various esophageal function and heartburn testing.
These tests include:
- High Resolution Manometry: This test records your esophageal muscle contractions to assess their strength and coordination.
- 24-hour pH and impedance studies: This test measures how much and how often acid and non-acidic fluid backs up into your food pipe over a 24-hour period. During that time, you will also keep a food diary in order to determine a link between your symptoms and reflux episodes.
These tests are invaluable in the assessment and evaluation of heartburn symptoms or other swallowing problems you may be experiencing. They are also often used to guide and customize the surgical treatment of GERD.
C. Steeve David, MD, FACS is the Director of the Heartburn Center and interprets all the tests done at the Center. Our highly trained nurses and personnel always focus on making the testing process as simple, seamless and comfortable as possible.
