Biography
Dr. Jessica Sommer was born and raised in New York State, spending most of her early years in Schenectady, NY. After high school, she went on to attend the Pennsylvania State University where she received a Bachelor of Science in General Science with double minors in biology and psychology. After graduation, she worked in the non-profit sector at the AIDS Council of Northeastern NY before realizing that her desire to care for patients and continue her medical education was overwhelmingly strong. She made the move to Westbury, NY to attend the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine where she received her Doctorate of Osteopathy. While there, she learned a more holistic approach to treating the patient, using hands on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy called osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
Throughout her medical education, women’s healthcare and surgery were strong interests for Dr. Sommer. After graduating in 2007, she moved to Washington D.C. to start an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at MedStar Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University. During her time there she developed her laparoscopic surgical skills and learned to care for a myriad of patients with different disorders and clinical presentations. She was awarded the Urogynecology Surgical Award at graduation for her interest and skill in gynecologic surgery.
She started her professional career at Arlington Women’s Center, located within Virginial Hospital Center, working with her prior mentors from residency. While there she grew her patient base and honed her surgical skills even more. She also became a Clinical Instructor for Georgetown University Medical School, mentoring 3rd year medical students during their ObGyn rotation at Virginia Hospital Center. After 4 exciting years with the practice, she went to a private practice in Annandale, VA and performed surgery and deliveries at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.
Now that she is back at Virginia Hospital Center, she is extremely excited to start working at the Physicians Group. She looks forward to becoming a part of their medical community and providing quality care to all patients. Dr. Sommer has areas of interest that include gynecologic surgery/minimally invasive procedures, preventative healthcare, teen gynecologic care, and contraception consultations. When not at work, Dr. Sommer enjoys being outdoors, fitness classes, cooking, and spending time with close friends and family.
