Occasionally, men and women can be born with a condition called a Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJO). This is a condition which subsequently results in blockage and poor drainage of the affected kidney. Often patients with this condition can go many years without even knowing they have it.

Patients with this problem will typically develop sudden flank or back pain often associated with consuming large quantities of fluids, blood in the urine or urianry infection. When the diagnosis of UPJO is suspected, it can be confirmed using radiologic imaging such as a CT scan, renal ultrasound, nuclear imaging, or combination of the above. If not properly corrected, the UPJO can often lead to compromised function of the affected kidney.

Fortunately, surgical repair of a UPJO is cuarative. There are a variety of techniques that can be utilized to to correct a UPJO from endoscopic procedure, open surgeries and laparascopic repairs. With the advanced technology of the da Vinci robot, a UPJO repair (pyeloplasty) can be done with outstanding results and minimal morbidity.

At Urology, our  da Vinci pyeloplasty is performed under general anesthesia using 4 or 5 very small (1cm each) abdominal incisions. The da Vinci robot allows the experienced robotic surgeon to successfully perform the pyeloplasty so that the affected kidney will be able to efficiently drain urine to the bladder. Our patients that undergo a da Vinci pyeloplasty are often discharged after only one night in the hospital and are generally back to normal activity within 10-14 days.
